Inverness is the start and finish of the NC500 making it a popular collection point for campervan hire Inverness. However, we sometimes forget Edinburgh and Glasgow Airports are approximately four hours away by car, making it a tricky point of collection for any campers coming to Scotland by air.
Why not break the journey up and collect your campervan hire in Perth? Perth makes for an excellent starting point for a campervan hire tour of Scotland, giving you clear access to the east OR west coast routes of Scotland.
You’ll have a few exciting days to enjoy getting to know your campervan before you reach Inverness and onward to the Scottish Highlands, plus you can stop at the Cairngorm National Park on the way!
There are many amazing sights to see around Perth and Kinross, and Scottish Tourer has even devised a West Coast route that starts from Perth and links up with Inverness.
As experienced motorhome travellers ourselves, we can confidently say that this is a fantastic driving route to see the very best of Scotland and get the most out of your campervan hire in Inverness.
Campervan hire Inverness is a great idea, until you realise how awkward the city is to get to. Unless you plan to drive up North in your own car before starting your campervan adventure, it can be rather inconvenient to start your motorhome holiday in Inverness itself.
Scottish Tourer has considered this point and worked hard to offer a convenient solution for campervan hire in Scotland. We know Inverness is a popular spot and provides the perfect gateway to the Scottish Highlands, but with the majority of campers arriving into Scotland via Edinburgh airport, Glasgow airport, or coming from down south, Inverness is not a very viable option for campervan hire Scotland.
With our convenient depot location in Perth, only 45 minutes from Edinburgh Airport and an hour from Glasgow airport, we can provide the perfect starting point for your motorhome hire holiday, particularly for anyone relying on flights or who has had a long drive up from the Scottish Border.
The last thing you want after arriving in Edinburgh or Glasgow is a further four-hour train journey up north! For this reason, Scottish Tourer offers a dedicated shuttle bus service that can come to collect you and your luggage direct from Edinburgh airport or Glasgow airport.
We’ll liaise with your schedule to ensure we arrive when you land. The bus service will then pick you up and then bring you directly to Perth so our team can show you around your campervan hire in person.
We have a wealth of knowledge, including mapped out routes, helpful guides, places of interest and fun, outdoor activities for you to try. What is more, this in-person meeting will give you the opportunity to ask any important questions before you set off on your campervan road trip.
You could also choose to start off your campervan hire holiday in Edinburgh, a beautiful city with a lot to offer!
If you’ve been looking into campervan hire Scotland, you’ve probably come across The Noth Coast 500 route. Definitely the most famous driving route in Scotland, and over the past five-ten years, it’s become extremely popular. Of course, there is good reason for this. There are many great spots along the route and the scenery is truly stunning. However, this very well publicised route has, unfortunately, become a victim of its own success.
The Scottish Tourer team decided to try the NC500 route for ourselves earlier this year (2020) after customer feedback, and we found it to be a bit of a nightmare. It was stressful to drive, the infrastructure of the roads and the local communities could not cope with the volume of traffic and too many drivers were simply not aware of the single-track road rules.
If your idea of a Scottish adventure isn’t sitting in long lines of campervan traffic, our advice would be to give the NC500 a miss.
There are plenty of other driving routes to try in Scotland and Scottish Tourer has taken the time to devise our own routes to ensure our customers get the most from their campervan hire holiday.
Our top recommendation is the Scottish Tourer West Coast route. This route takes you through the Scottish Highlands, starting in Perth heading towards the beautiful Cairngorm National Park. On the way north you’ll visit Inverness and Loch Ness, the home of Scotland’s famous sea monster, Nessie.
After making your way along the winding northern roads, you’ll start to head over to the west coast of Scotland where the true beauty of the Scottish highlands can be found.
Top spots to check out here include:
Isle of Skye
Finally, you’ll find yourself on the road back to Perth, arriving from the opposite direction you left from, completing the route in style. Our West Coast route will provide you with some of Scotland's best scenery, castles, distilleries, award-winning restaurants, fishing spots, fantastic walks, and cycling paths, to mention but a few.
If you feel like an east coast tour of Scotland would suit you better, consider hiring a campervan in Fife.
